Purpose
Forestry professionals and landowners (private and industrial) in the Southeast are increasingly interested in managing forestland to enhance habitats for wildlife species. This course aims to provide technical information on specific techniques used to enhance and preserve wildlife habitat on forested land. Topics will include managing forest stands for wildlife and timber, managing for white-tailed deer and game bird species in the Southeast, things to consider when planting food plots and other wildlife plantings, and other principles and applications of wildlife-habitat management techniques.
Who Will Benefit?
Private and state foresters, loggers, members of forestry associations, forestry and wildlife professionals (consultants and managers), forest landowners interested in wildlife management on their lands, realtors, and wildlife biologists.

Instructors
Dr. James T. Johnson is an Outreach Program Specialist with the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. His research while at the Warnell School focused on developing a survey method for assessing white-tailed deer populations using trail cameras. James has spent most of his life on his family’s farm in North Georgia engaging in numerous land management activities and has been a member and advocate of the hunting community for over 20 years.

Dr. Karl V. Miller is an Emeritus Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Management at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. Miller’s research focuses on the habitat requirements and management of white-tailed deer and on the impact of forest management practices on deer and other wildlife. He is co-author of the books Quality Whitetails, Forest Plants of the Southeast and Their Wildlife Uses, and Quality Food Plots.

Dr. Michel Kohl is a Wildlife Management and Extension faculty in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. His work primarily focuses on the application of GPS technology to address management and conservation questions that pertain to wildlife distributions.

David Osborn is the Research Coordinator for the Deer Lab in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. David oversees research at the Whitehall Deer Research Facility, teaching students skills related to working with captive deer.

Registration Fee
The fee for this 12-hour course is $350.00, which includes lunch, refreshment breaks, and instructional materials. There is a $50.00 discount for fees paid and postmarked by November 29, 2021.
