Purpose and Objectives
Cartography is the art of representing spatial data in an organized and realistic manner through maps. The goal of this lecture and laboratory course is to show foresters and natural resource managers how to present information and improve communication through maps.

This four-hour course:

Introduces different types of maps along with the basics of map design.

  • Introduces methods for laying out maps in ArcGIS.
  • Discusses sources of mapping data.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Create management-related maps that effectively display critical information.
  • Locate base maps that may be valuable to visualizing spatial data.
  • Students will compete to see who can design the best map. The winner will have an opportunity to have their map published in an upcoming edition of Forest Management and Planning.

Who Should Attend?
Natural resource management professionals who have an interest in learning more about cartography and using maps to support natural resource management.  Upper-level managers who would like to be able to create basic maps as well as field personnel who would like to use maps to visualize field data should find the course useful. Those with some knowledge of ArcGIS who would like to learn more about map production.

Format
The course follows a lecture and laboratory format.  Most of the material will be presented in a step-by-step manner, so that the class can follow the directions provided by the instructor and simultaneously use them on individual computers in a computer lab.  The class utilizes ArcGIS.  Handouts will be provided to summarize the material presented.
