Longleaf Plantation Silviculture, Growth and Yield, and Potential Financial Returns

1431 Capital Avenue, Suite 117, Watkinsville, Georgia 30677

Date: 10/20/2009 from 09:00 am to 04:15 pm

Longleaf pine has enjoyed something of a resurgence in popularity over the last 15 years due in large part to government willingness to make CRP payments to farmers to convert agricultural fields to longleaf plantations. This has also led to much more research on regenerating and growing longleaf. Still, many managers have misconceptions about longleaf management that are a holdover from managing natural longleaf stands very extensively. This course is intended to provide foresters, landowners, and others interested in longleaf with the most up to date and objective information about a fascinating and potentially valuable species that should be considered for many landowner objectives.

Topics covered
  • Regenerating Longleaf - The problems and some solutions
  • Getting Longleaf out of the grass stage
  • Response of Longleaf to herbaceous weed control
  • Response of Longeaf to woody release and fertilization
  • Thinning Longleaf pine
  • Yield expectations for Longleaf
