Logging Cost Analysis

Purpose
This course will cover both principles and applications of logging cost analysis techniques from the perspective of wood dealers, procurement foresters, and independent logging contractors.  Course content will focus on methods for evaluating historic production and cost records within the context of the evolving wood supply chain.  Spreadsheet models will be reviewed and provided to participants for hands-on training involving modifications necessary to assess and simulate a range of harvesting systems, techniques, and equipment mix variations.  Upon completion of this course, participants should be well-equipped to better evaluate logging costs using a range of techniques.

Who Should Attend?

Foresters, wood buyers, and logging contractors involved in wood procurement, sale layout, and timber harvesting.  Forest engineers, forestry equipment representatives, and others who service the timber harvesting industry would benefit from the course content.


Equipment Needs
All participants must bring a laptop computer with Microsoft Excel version 2007 or later. Please also bring 25-foot extension cord for powering your laptop. Files used for the class will be transferred from a flash drive or provided on a CD.

Instructors
Dr. Joe Conrad
is an assistant professor of forest operations in the Center for Forest Business at the University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources. Joe teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on topics such as timber harvesting and field measurements. He conducts research on timber harvesting productivity and cost, logging capacity, timber procurement, and wood supply chain efficiency. He has experience analyzing logging costs in both the South and the Midwest. Joe earned a B.S. in forestry from The University of the South and an M.F. and Ph.D. in forest operations from Virginia Tech. Joe is a member of the Council on Forest Engineering, Society of American Foresters, and the Georgia Forestry Association.

Dr. Chad Bolding
is an associate professor of forest operations/engineering in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.  Chad teaches courses in forest harvesting, timber procurement, and harvesting systems evaluation.  He has a B.S. and M.S. in forestry from Auburn University, and an M.F in silviculture and Ph.D. in forest engineering from Oregon State University.  Chad conducts research in the areas of supply chain management, harvesting system feasibility and logistics, sustainable biomass utilization, and forestry best management practices.  He is active in professional organizations such as the Society of American Foresters, the Council on Forest Engineering, the Forest Resources Association, and is an adjunct member of the faculties at Clemson University and the University of Georgia.

Dr. Mathew Schmidt
Dr. Mathew Smidt is a professor and extension specialist in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University. Mathew is the primary instructor and curriculum developer for the the Professional Logging Manager Training Program in Alabama. He has completed logging industry research projects related to bioenergy, forestry best management practices, logging cost, logging safety and health, logger training and transportation. Mathew has an M.F. from Duke University and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He holds joint appointments in the Departments of Biosystems Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering at Auburn University.

A block of rooms has been set aside for course attendees at the “Hampton Inn by Hilton Downtown Montgomery" for the nights of June 6 and 7. The hotel address is 100 Commerce Street, Montgomery, Alabama. Rooms are $119.00 per night plus 14% percent sales tax. There is also a $12.00 per day parking charge.
