Forests and Hurricanes: Impacts and Planning Considerations

Severe storms have the ability to disrupt forest management and normal forestry operating practices for a number of years. Natural resource managers should be prepared to address a wide variety of concerns related to severe storms, including access, salvage, and risk reduction. Therefore, this course provides an overview of the average intensity of severe storms along the coasts, the factors associated with storm damage to forests, the perceptions of forest managers regarding these factors, and a number of planning and management considerations as they relate to preparation and response to severe storm events.

Who Should Attend?

Natural resource management professionals who have interest and responsibility for the planning and management of forest resources. Natural resource professionals who want to learn more about the impact of unpredictable natural disasters, such as severe storm events (hurricanes), on forest resources. Disaster management professionals and state and local administrators who want to learn more about the role of forestry and forests in the preparation and response to severe wind events.

Format

The course follows a direct presentation and case study format. Handouts will be provided to summarize the material presented. A discussion period will be provided at the end of the program, if time permits, to allow participants to informally expand on the ideas presented in the course.

Instructor

Dr. Pete Bettinger is a professor in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. He has more than 25 years of operating, teaching, and research experience in forestry and natural resources, including roles with the U.S. Forest Service, several forest products companies, and Oregon State University. Dr. Bettinger has taught courses on forest measurements, forest planning, and harvest scheduling, as well as GIS applications in natural resource management. In 2009, Academic Press published his book Forest Management and Planning, and in 2008 Oxford University Press published his book Geographic Information Systems: Applications in Natural Resource Management. Dr. Bettinger earned BS and MS degrees from Virginia Tech; and a PhD from Oregon State University.

Location and Directions

The course will be held in Building 4, room 516 of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. A visitor parking deck is located just north of the Georgia Center. Parking is $10.00 per day.For a map and directions go to:
