Purpose
Increasingly, private landowners are developing deer management programs on their properties. However, a successful deer management program requires an understanding of deer ecology, behavior, and habitat requirements.course will focus on providing an overview of white-tailed deer ecology and provide guidelines toward the application of sound principles for the management of deer on private lands in the Southeast.
This course will answer questions such as:
- How can I improve my timber stands for deer?
- What are the best options for deer food plots?
- How do predators and diseases affect my deer herd?
- How can I determine how many deer I have on my property?
- ….and many more.
Who Will Benefit?
This short course will be valuable to forestry professionals, including consultants and forest managers, forest landowners interested in wildlife management on their lands, and deer enthusiasts.
Instructors
Karl V. Miller is professor of Wildlife Ecology and Management at the University of Georgia’s Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. Miller’s research focuses on the habitat requirements and management of white-tailed deer and on the impact of forest management practices on deer and other wildlife. He is co-author of the books Quality Deer Management and Forest Plants of the Southeast and Their Wildlife Uses. He obtained his Ph. D. from University of Georgia.
Brian Murphy is the Executive Director of the Quality Deer Management Association, located in Bogart, GA. He received his Master’s Degree in Wildlife Ecology and Management at the University of Georgia’s Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. The QDMA's mission is to promote sustainable, high-quality white-tailed deer populations, wildlife habitats, and ethical hunting experiences through education, research, and management in partnership with hunters, landowners, natural resource professionals, and the public.
