Forestry Ethics

This Forestry Ethics course is designed for professional foresters who want to remain grounded in their ethical obligations to serve the public and be stewards of the land. It provides an introduction to ethics, principles of ethics, and ethics in forestry. It also includes information about different approaches to ethical decision-making and the steps to be taken in ethical decision-making. Online resources include thought-provoking ethics quotes and online links that focus on forestry ethics. This course has been approved by the Society of American Foresters (SAF).

HOLIDAY SEASON NOTICE: Registration for online courses in 2021 will end at 5:00 PM, Thursday, December 23. UGA is closed during the week between Christmas and New Years. To receive CFE credit for a given year, course assignments must be completed by December 31, 2019. Certificates will be issued when UGA reopens in January but will have the appropriate year completion dates on them. The University of Georgia may shut down the online learning environment for updates anytime between during the holiday break. Plan accordingly.

 

NOTICE: As of 1/3/2014, the learning management system that runs this course has been upgraded. Anyone who had registered prior to this has been moved to the new system and their password has been reset. Who Should Take This Course?

  • Professional foresters who want to remain grounded in their ethical obligations to serve the public and serve as stewards of the land.
  • Registered foresters needing forestry continuing education (CFE) credits to continue their forestry registration and maintain their licenses
  • Professional foresters wishing to attain Category 1 CFEs approved by the Society of American Foresters.
  • All others with an interest in forestry ethics
  • Please Note: This course is no longer required by the Georgia State Board of Registration for Foresters.

 

Course Prerequisites & What do Successful Graduates Earn?

There are no course pre-requisites and the course is free if no credit is required. To complete this self-paced, self-study course, you must:

  1. Send an email to James Johnson (james.johnson26@uga.edu ) requesting a user account.
  2. Log in and review the stated learning objectives for the course.
  3. Read the Forestry Ethics online content.
  4. If you would like CFE credits you will also:
  5. Correctly answer the "Assessment 1: Multiple Choice Test", self-study questions drawn from the material reviewed. (70% minimum score required)
  6. Complete the "Assessment 2: Ethical Scenario" assignment. This assignment must be submitted to the instructor for grading.
  7. Pay the $30 administrative fee for CFE credits (after completing the assessments).

Once you have received your registration information, you will have up to 30 days to complete the required assignments. A written exercise will be graded by the course facilitator, Ingvar Elle, and your results will be e-mailed to your preferred address within 30 days.

Ingvar Elle will send the CFE certificate and information about making your payment.

Foresters will earn a 1 hour Category 1 CFE Certificate from the Society of American Foresters (SAF).

Learning Objectives

  1. Define the term "ethics."

  2. Distinguish between the terms "ethics" and "values."
  3. Suggest several reasons why the term "ethics" is difficult to define.
  4. List and summarize the three categories of ethics principles.
  5. Explain why ethics is important in the forestry profession.
  6. Distinguish among the five different approaches to ethical decision-making.
  7. Select and defend one approach to ethical decision-making during a prescribed ethical dilemma.
  8. List and summarize the five steps in ethical decision-making.

The course materials are available 24/7 once a user account is created. Registration requires a first and last name and valid email address.

Georgia Foresters

To satisfy the requirements of the Georgia State Board of Registration for Foresters, a maximum of 3 credit hours can be obtained through the below online courses and other approved Self-Study Programs. A minimum of 9 credit hours must be obtained through participation in Live-Study Programs.
